An engineer at the throttle of a locomotive speeding through a tunnel sees the lights of a train approaching from the other end. Although the signals say the track is clear, he still sees the train's lights. He grinds the train to a halt, derailing it. He survives, but many passengers are killed. He is fired in disgrace, but sets out to prove his innocence by finding the "phantom express."

Well Done Express
Yes, nicely done film with amateur detectives from the big city helping some down home English types - particularly a RR engineer - and his family and friends. The engineer sees a train when there shouldn't be one coming - his actions in trying to avoid a wreck cause damage to the train and injuries to people. And there have been other phantom trains - and wrecks - and there is a group of men who want to buy the RR now that the stock price is depressed. Why don't the RR officials and police investigate - because there would be no film. Otherwise, figure it out for yourself. The beauty here is in the charming down home scenes - particularly a birthday party for the suddenly disgraced and dismissed engineer. The fun is in how the city boys together with the country folk resolve to and do solve the mystery. An enjoyable mystery and home life melodrama from a different time and place.

Nice special effects.
I enjoyed the special effects used in this movie. Of course there is no comparison to modern techniques, but the FX team did an excellent job on this production.
@accalaurie49, the speeding train through the tunnel is located at +/- 20:11.

Good fun!!
Yes, the description is rather...misleading, or inaccurate, but it's a good solid story, fun characters, and a peek into a world I never would have known. Not a blockbuster- but a good ride.
Well worth my 15 cents, with a dime left for popcorn and a soda-pop!

"Speeding through a tunnel"? Where?
The film´s description which you can read above is partly wrong: There is no tunnel in the whole movie. And there is one other point where the description is leading you the wrong way but I won´t mention it. You will find out yourself.
The movie itself is well worth watching. Interesting railroad mystery, including melodrama and romance. Adequate acting. Parts of the story are hard to believe.

better print, no good file
the print used for this looks much cleaner than the existing one. unfortunately, the windows-media-file doesn't look so well. low quality and even some interlacing. if we could get a 700 mb divx/avi version of this, this would be terrific.
